When I set out to create a piece for Billy's Boston shows, I was captivated by the idea of the city as a complex hive, full of history, energy, and stories. I imagined the band's music as the force that animates it all. The wasps became keepers of this hive, their wings bearing traditional quilt patterns as a nod to the deep Appalachian roots in the music. Each cell in the honeycomb is a little window into a different world—the familiar sight of a coffee cup, a glimpse of the city skyline, a barrel holding a starry cosmos—all representing the different memories and feelings the music brings to the surface. It’s about the collision of old traditions and modern life, all held together in one fragile, beautiful structure.
