This piece began as an exploration of sound and scale, a vision born from the raw energy of live music echoing within an iconic space. I wanted to capture that inimitable moment when a performance transcends the stage, swelling to fill every corner of an arena, and decided to sculpt Rupp Arena itself into an instrument.
At its heart, you'll find an enormous banjo head, its taut strings not merely musical, but radiating outwards to become the very rows of seats that cradle thousands of listeners. Each detail, from the hand-carved filigree of ivy and musical notes that adorn the banjo's rim, to the rich textures of walnut and mahogany woodgrain, speaks to the craftsmanship of the bluegrass tradition. Above, the grand Rupp Arena marquee transforms into the instrument’s headstock, its letters glowing with a soft, backlit neon that suggests the anticipation before the first note.
As your eye travels upwards, the stadium gives way to the dusky Kentucky twilight sky, where the familiar silhouettes of Lexington’s rolling Bluegrass hills are layered, almost like a dream. Spotlights pierce through the mist, guiding your gaze and mirroring the geometry of the strings below. Subtle nods to the venue's spirit, like a faint Wildcat logo or the hint of a bourbon barrel pattern, are woven into the scene, grounding this expansive vision firmly in its Kentucky home without overshadowing the soulful bluegrass mood.
The palette blends rustic warmth – the moss greens and earthy browns of the banjo – with the electric vibrancy of the arena, featuring luminous cobalt and cerulean blues, punctuated by neon amber highlights. It's a fusion, a conversation between the organic and the monumental, inspired by the flowing scripts of Art Nouveau and the vibrant transitions of 1960s psychedelic folk art. This print is a celebration of that communal electricity, a visual melody for the eyes.
